An hourglass sand timer lets you step out of your phone's grip for a measured pause, and this one makes that pause feel like a small ritual. At eleven centimeters of antique brass and hand-blown glass, the vessel sits cradled between brass posts, settled on its weighted base, standing quietly wherever you place it.

  • Pick the duration you need, from sixty seconds to a quarter hour
  • Comes with white granules or black ones, your choice
  • No charging, no muting, no switch to hunt for
  • No screen enters the exchange at all

No chime, no attention demanded, just sand moving and the room going still around it.

Pregled

To time three minutes, you now pick up the one object in the house that is designed to break your concentration. You unlock it, set the timer, and at some point in the next three minutes you are reading something else. Timing was never the problem. The problem was the thing you had to touch to do it.

Stasis is 11 cm of antique brass and hand-blown glass with one job. Turn it over and the sand begins to fall. Nothing lights up, nothing pings and no notification needs dismissing at the end. It simply runs out, and you notice, because the falling stream is the only thing moving on the table.

The frame is solid brass with an antiqued finish: two turned discs held apart by three slim posts, screwed and not glued, with the glass held between soft washers so that it does not chip when put down hard. At 175 g it has the weight of something machined, not moulded, and the wide base means a knocked table does not send it to the floor. The sand is graded quartz, sifted so that the grains run at an even rate and do not surge and stall as they do in cheap timers.

There are seven run times, because a timer of the wrong length is only an ornament. One and two minutes for tea, a French press or brushing your teeth properly. Three, four and five for a breathing exercise, a plank or the pause before you reply to something annoying. Ten and fifteen for a block of focused work, winding down before bed or as much tidying as you can face. White sand or black, both in the same brass.

Nega

Dust the brass with a soft, dry cloth. Leave the antique finish as it is: brass polish strips the darkened tone from the recesses and leaves it looking like a new door handle. For the glass, breathe on it and wipe with a microfibre cloth; do not spray, because liquid running into the seal can reach the sand and make it clump. Keep it out of a steamy bathroom for the same reason. If the flow ever slows, the cause is nearly always damp and not a blockage, so leave it somewhere warm and dry for a day.

Why it keeps time

The fill is graded quartz sifted to one grain size, so it runs at a steady rate and does not surge and stall as unsorted sand doesSolid brass discs and posts joined with screws and not glue, with the glass held in soft washers so that it survives being put down hard175 g with a wide base and a low centre of gravity, so a knocked table shifts it and does not tip it over

Ebb™ Sand Timer running beside a mug of tea on an oak table

The three minutes you always lose

Tea, a French press, a breathing exercise, a plank: all the small timed things for which you now pick up a phone, and then lose fifteen minutes. Turn it over and the timing happens on the table and not in your hand.

Smaller than the photos make it look

It is 11 cm tall and 6 cm across the base, so it sits in one hand and takes up less of the desk than a mug. At 175 g it is heavy for its size, because the frame is solid brass and not plated zinc.

Ebb™ Sand Timer detail — solid brass frame, hand-blown glass, weighted base

Held by screws, not glue

Three brass posts run between two turned discs, fixed with visible screws, and the hand-blown glass is held in soft washers at each end. That is the difference between an object that lasts and one that falls apart in a drawer.

Bought the 5 for tea, use it for everything

Ordered it to stop over-brewing green tea and it has ended up timing my morning stretch as well. The sand runs smoothly the whole way rather than dumping at the end, which the cheap one I had before did. Timed it against my phone twice and it was within a few seconds both times.

It is genuinely small

The listing says 11 cm and I still managed to picture something twice the size. It is a desk object, not a mantelpiece piece. Once I adjusted my expectations it is lovely - proper weight to it, and the brass has that slightly darkened look rather than shiny gold.

The 15 is the one for work

I flip it at the start of a task and do not touch my phone until it runs out. Sounds like a gimmick, works better than any app I have paid for, mostly because there is nothing to open. Black sand is easier to see across a desk than white, for what it is worth.

Pogosta vprašanja

How accurate is the timing?
Within a few seconds of its stated time, which is what a graded quartz fill gives you. Sand timers are not stopwatches: humidity, and how firmly you put it down, both change the flow a little. For steeping tea, a breathing exercise or a block of focused work that is close enough. If you need a cut-off exact to the second, use a stopwatch.
Which run time should I choose?
1 and 2 minutes: green tea, a French press, brushing your teeth properly. 3 to 5 minutes: black tea, a breathing exercise, a plank, the pause before you answer an annoying email. 10 and 15 minutes: a block of focused work, winding down before bed, or as much tidying as you can face. If you are buying only one, 5 minutes is the most useful.
What is its actual size?
11 cm tall and 6 cm across the base, and about 175 g. It sits comfortably in one hand and has roughly the footprint of a mug on a desk. Small brass objects nearly always look larger in photographs, so hold up a ruler before you order.
Is the frame solid brass, or plated?
Solid brass with an antiqued finish, which accounts for most of the 175 g. Plated zinc of this size would weigh nearer 60 g and wear through at the edges within a year. The darkening in the recesses is an intended patina and not tarnish, so do not use brass polish: it would strip the tone and leave the shiny finish of a door handle.
Should I take white sand or black?
The difference is only visual: both are the same graded quartz and run for the same time. White looks softer and blends into a pale room. Black gives much more contrast, so you can see from across a desk how much is left. For a work desk, as opposed to a shelf, take the black.
Can it be kept in a bathroom or kitchen?
A kitchen counter is fine. A steamy bathroom is not a good long-term place for it, because sand timers are sensitive to damp, and lasting humidity eventually makes the grains clump and the flow stutter. If that happens it can be put right: leave it somewhere warm and dry for a day and it will run cleanly again.
